Indiana University Dance Marathon receives 2020 Alumni Engagement Award
Indiana University Dance Marathon was awarded the Alumni Engagement Award at Dance Marathon Leadership Conference 2020. The Alumni Engagement Award recognizes a Dance Marathon organization that has made a successful effort to engage with their alumni including former participants, committee members, and leadership team members.
The Indiana University Dance Marathon Alumni Board and Alumni Relations Committee work together to create experiences for the program’s 30 years of alumni members. Together they identify target audiences based on graduation years, geographic regions, and previous committee involvement in order to develop communication strategies and alumni-specific programming.

By creating an annual cadence of year-round support, alumni have grown to know how and when they can activate to create the largest impact on culture, awareness, and fundraising. Prime examples of alumni activation during the 2019 and 2020 IUDM years:
- For the 2019 marathon year, IUDM alumni’s financial contributions totaled over $381,000. Thirty years of alumni are represented among the more than 3,600 individual alumni donors.
- More than 150 alumni attended marathon weekend. Alumni were recognized on stage and those celebrating anniversary years received a button with their anniversary year to wear. Additionally, alumni experienced a fully programmed weekend, including the annual Alumni Brunch, during which a state of the union and last alumni fundraising solicitation occurred, followed by an evening of reunion and celebration.
- The ALC Legacy Endowment was created by alumni in conjunction with Riley Children’s Foundation to serve as the premier way for alumni to direct their donations in overall support of IUDM’s contribution to Riley. This endowment has encouraged several meaningful gifts from alumni, including five-figure donations, estate gifts, and multi-year pledges. Seventy-five founding members made an endowment gift in its first year, totaling more than $160,000.
- Alumni Board has created a sub-committee to support additional initiatives surrounding IUDM’s 30th anniversary This sub-committee engages ten additional alumni, including IUDM’s founders. This group has already proven successful in reactivating alumni members and therefore will continue into future years.
