Elonthon Surpasses Goal and Sets New Record

1,300 Elon University students participated in the school’s annual Children’s Miracle Network Dance Marathon event benefitting Duke Children’s. Elonthon dancers from all walks of life on campus united to make miracles happen for patients at the hospital. Since Elonthon started in 2003, Elon students have raised over $2 million to support Duke Children’s. This year, the leadership team set a fundraising goal of $400,000, and participants responded by raising an announced total of $452,964.18, establishing a new program record. These funds help Duke Children’s continue to provide the highest quality patient-centered care possible to every child who needs our help.

Students had the opportunity to participate in the event for six, 12, or 24 hours. Participants enjoyed a packed schedule filled with Morale dances, color team wars, games, and much more. Every dancer’s favorite moments were the inspirational stories told by the more than 15 Miracle Families who attended the event. These are families that have children that have been or are still being treated at Duke Children’s. Their stories served as poignant reminders of the positive impact that the Dance Marathon participants and supporters have had and continue to have on the hospital.

Love’s Travel Stops, a dedicated Children’s Miracle Network partner since 1999, provided a $10,000 grant to assist with operational and event costs. This was critical in allowing Elonthon to raise even more money and awareness for Duke Children’s this year. Many other members of the surrounding community, including the leadership at Elon University, came together and pledged support to make Elonthon 2018 a resounding success. It was a true community effort.

The event was much more than 24 hours for these students. It had been a 365-day effort that began immediately after Elonthon 2017. Leadership implemented promotions and events on campus, not only to raise funds for Duke Children’s, but also to raise awareness. Their year was highlighted by two outstanding push days, including a fundraising push day that culminated with an announced total of $53,848 raised in one day. The end of the year event served as a celebration for the efforts of all involved. Check out the event recap video to experience the excitement!

Congratulations, Elonthon, on a truly incredible year, and thank you for your continued support of Duke Children’s!
